Vigilante

Name of Film:
Vigilante

Screening:
Sat. July 24 at 3:00pm

Filmmaker:
Darren Bolton - Director

Total Runtime:
12 mins

Genre:
Drama / Crime

Synopsis:
Set in the quiet and idyllic
village of Hewson, Vigilante is a dark and satirical mockumentary that
provides insight into a group of villagers determined to eradicate
crime and anti-social behaviour in their community. The villagers, driven by
a lack of police
intervention and a hatred of bystander apathy, have formed
a vigilance committee with the goal of tracking down and dealing with those
committing criminal offence. Through the
eyes of a documentary film crew, we
follow
the story of committee member Pep (Simon Cassidy) a passionate and playful
character, as he embarks
on his nightly patrols of the village. Pep’s agenda is simple
‘to clean the streets of scum’ by whatever
means necessary, and it appears
for a while that
his methods are working. With the local police force
on his side Pep works harder than ever cleaning up the litter, intercepting
graffiti artists and putting a stop
to football hooligans singing in the street.
But as the
crew continue to follow him, his methods for controlling
‘the scum’ become evermore unorthodox and violent, and comparing himself to Batman,
he begins to take on the role of judge,
jury and executioner. In this comic, and at
times harrowing short
film, Pep’s actions lay the foundations for a much wider
debate, in
which audiences are asked to consider their own understanding of crime
and punishment and to what lengths are acceptable to make a community
a safer, better place.

Salawati
Name of Film: Salawati

Screening: Fri. July 23 at 5:00pm

Name and Position of Filmmakers:
Marc X Grigoroff, writer/director

Total Runtime: 80 mins

Genre: Drama

Synopsis:
“Salawati” is the story of a 12-year-old Singaporean-Malay girl
who has just witnessed the drowning of her brother. Wati, who cannot
swim, begs a man to help, but he ignores her pleas. Her mother tries
to hold the family together, while her father struggles to control his
grief and misdirected anger – even as he seeks refuge in Islam.
Wati’s story is intertwined with those of a hard-drinking Indian
courier and a Chinese man consumed by career goals. It becomes
increasingly clear that each of these men played a role in the death
of her brother, and as Wati begins to follow them, the mystery
deepens. Finally, a haunting sequence illuminates the events
surrounding her brother’s death, and Wati is left with a choice that
will change the lives of everyone. “Salawati” explores the fragile
nature of human relationships and calls into question our notions of
morality, mercy, revenge and forgiveness.

A few words of profanity; an angry driver shouts "motherf*cker" in
Chinese, and this is subtitled; in another scene a man recounts an
incident where he told a taxi driver to "kiss my black ass", then
repeats it for emphasis. I guess anyone over 12 ought to be able to
see the film; or anyone who's been standing next to someone who
smashes his finger with a hammer.

Message:
Singapore is a small island, about the size of Chicago, yet it is home
to myriad cultures, religions and languages. How these disparate
groups co-exist, while struggling to understand one another, has
fascinated since I arrived here 12 years ago. Salawati is an
expression of that fascination.

Breathtaking (Dasak)

Name of Film: BREATHTAKING (DAŠAK)

Name and Position of Filmmakers:
Vojin Vasovic- director

Total Runtime: 32 mins

Genre: drama

Synopsis:
Breathtaking deals with the theme of power in an unusual way, without
looking for its source or further development, placing it into the
hands of somebody who would never be able to get it in his real life
and even if he would, he could not achieve anything with it. Through
an ironical psychological drama interwoven with the Pirandellian
opinion on life "nothing is sure and there is no real truth" we are
getting the story; not how we can do more than we thought, but how we
can destroy a lot more than we wanted to. - Just a puff... and gone!

There is profanity. One of the characters (the Muskrat Boy) sings two
obscene, dirty poems in the film. I think it would be fine for teenagers and older.

There is a lot of profanity and a little bit of blood.

Will someone from the film be attending the festival?
Ty Huffer will try to attend the day of Bite Size's showing.

Message:
Bite Size is the epitome of an independent film. The script was
written around locations the crew would be able to secure including
the main location of the hot tub provided by the lead Chris Green's
parents. The hot tub featured in the film is one and the same as that
which inspired the story for "Bite Size". An entirely local cast and
crew worked for the sheer joy of filmmaking, a few pizzas, Vitamin
Water and Jones Soda (many thanks to both companies' generous
contributions to the project). Working with a budget funded mainly
out-of-pocket by the Director and also with the magnanimous help of
many friends and a single fundraiser. Some costumes were donated by
Champion's while most of the wardrobe was provided by the actors
themselves. Using a DVX 100 camera, a few shop lights and a homemade
soft box the cast and crew worked late hours to get the necessary
night scenes completed, much to the chagrin of the surrounding
homeowners. With the help of the Digital Media school of the
University of Washington the crew was able to film the shark point of
view shots with an underwater camera case.
