Salawati
Name of Film: Salawati

Screening: Fri. July 23 at 5:00pm

Name and Position of Filmmakers:
Marc X Grigoroff, writer/director

Total Runtime: 80 mins

Genre: Drama

Synopsis:
“Salawati” is the story of a 12-year-old Singaporean-Malay girl
who has just witnessed the drowning of her brother. Wati, who cannot
swim, begs a man to help, but he ignores her pleas. Her mother tries
to hold the family together, while her father struggles to control his
grief and misdirected anger – even as he seeks refuge in Islam.
Wati’s story is intertwined with those of a hard-drinking Indian
courier and a Chinese man consumed by career goals. It becomes
increasingly clear that each of these men played a role in the death
of her brother, and as Wati begins to follow them, the mystery
deepens. Finally, a haunting sequence illuminates the events
surrounding her brother’s death, and Wati is left with a choice that
will change the lives of everyone. “Salawati” explores the fragile
nature of human relationships and calls into question our notions of
morality, mercy, revenge and forgiveness.

A few words of profanity; an angry driver shouts "motherf*cker" in
Chinese, and this is subtitled; in another scene a man recounts an
incident where he told a taxi driver to "kiss my black ass", then
repeats it for emphasis. I guess anyone over 12 ought to be able to
see the film; or anyone who's been standing next to someone who
smashes his finger with a hammer.

Message:
Singapore is a small island, about the size of Chicago, yet it is home
to myriad cultures, religions and languages. How these disparate
groups co-exist, while struggling to understand one another, has
fascinated since I arrived here 12 years ago. Salawati is an
expression of that fascination.

Vojin Vasovic- director

Total Runtime: 32 mins

Breathtaking deals with the theme of power in an unusual way, without
looking for its source or further development, placing it into the
hands of somebody who would never be able to get it in his real life
and even if he would, he could not achieve anything with it. Through
an ironical psychological drama interwoven with the Pirandellian
opinion on life "nothing is sure and there is no real truth" we are
getting the story; not how we can do more than we thought, but how we
can destroy a lot more than we wanted to. - Just a puff... and gone!

There is a lot of profanity and a little bit of blood.

Will someone from the film be attending the festival?
Ty Huffer will try to attend the day of Bite Size's showing.

Message:
Bite Size is the epitome of an independent film. The script was
written around locations the crew would be able to secure including
the main location of the hot tub provided by the lead Chris Green's
parents. The hot tub featured in the film is one and the same as that
which inspired the story for "Bite Size". An entirely local cast and
crew worked for the sheer joy of filmmaking, a few pizzas, Vitamin
Water and Jones Soda (many thanks to both companies' generous
contributions to the project). Working with a budget funded mainly
out-of-pocket by the Director and also with the magnanimous help of
many friends and a single fundraiser. Some costumes were donated by
Champion's while most of the wardrobe was provided by the actors
themselves. Using a DVX 100 camera, a few shop lights and a homemade
soft box the cast and crew worked late hours to get the necessary
night scenes completed, much to the chagrin of the surrounding
homeowners. With the help of the Digital Media school of the
University of Washington the crew was able to film the shark point of
view shots with an underwater camera case.

There is a small amount of blood in the film. This would probably only upset the smallest children.Parental Guidance!

Message: Thank you for accepting The Nightclub! I hope everyone who sees it
enjoys it and takes something from it!

Below is the director's statement:
Nightclubs are fascinating places. They are one of the last vestiges of hedonism, where people can freely indulge in behaviour that would actually cause alarm in any other social arena. The recipe is simple; take a couple of hundred people, pack them into a crowded space with thumping music, play them with alcohol and see what happens. And things do happen.

Apart from the obvious cinematic appeal of shooting a science-fiction film in an environment with sporadic lighting, silhouettes and plenty of physical movement, what attracted me to the script was the idea of deceit. It is something that the majority of us practise every day in one way or another, be it the simple adjusting of our mannerisms in a given social situation, or a blatant lie to someone else. As with most science-fiction, the protagonist's literal and fantastic ability to deceive in this film serves as a metaphor with wider implications, in this case, the way we choose to present ourselves socially to others.

I wanted to convey the idea of a young man who is 'learning the ropes', who is still trying to decide who he wants to be in life, who is discovering his talents and attributes but finds himself
out-classed by those more confident and experienced than him. This seemed important to me because although these sorts of issues are usually attributed to adolescence and early adulthood (the relative youth of the cast is not accidental), i think they actually transcend age and continue to apply to many facets of adult life. One can certainly have similar experiences starting out in the film industry!

The other point i feel is worth mentioning is the role of sound in the film. In wanting to remain true to the nightclub environment, i decided quite early on that we were not going to hear any of the dialogue between the characters. This was partly because i usually find that the music in clubs is loud to the extent that one can barely hear any conversation, but more importantly, by denying the viewer the means to hear what is being said, it forces them to focus on the characters' movements, body language and facial expressions. This seemed the right thing to do as it is these physical characteristics that draw so much more attention in a nightclub, a realm where people tend to be judged much more quickly by their posture and 'physical attitude' than any other other i can think of. Of course, this meant that the music in the film became doubly important and had to occupy a curious middle ground between representing the music playing in the club and also functioning as a score, an objective that i think it has achieved well. Interestingly, while editing the film i noticed something that confirmed an old adage we are often told about film being a visual medium- the story is at least 80% comprehensible with the sound turned off...

Premiere Status: Florida Premiere

Synopsis:
American Dumpling is a feature-length documentary about many diverse

cultures and the one food they have in common-dumplings. It presents
itself as a simple story of flour, water and salt, and how these
ingredients bind us together in our search for "comfort food". It is a
movie that focuses not on our differences, but on what binds us
together as a society, regardless of our race, gender or age. The
melting pot of America is the melting pot of the dumpling, and
although each cook has his own unique little spin he puts in the
recipe, it still boils down to three ingredients that are absolutely
necessary-flour, water and salt.

Sea Breeze Film Fest Partners with The City of Gulfport

The Sea Breeze Film Festival has chosen the Catherine Hickman Theater in the quaint and beautiful City of Gulfport, FL as its venue for the upcoming festival which will take place from Fri. July 23 - Sun. July 25.

The festival's goal
in choosing a venue was to create a communal, friendly, relaxed environment where people can watch films, gather, mingle and network - all in a cozy location which facilitates community and communication. We knew we had found the right location for this event when we visited the Catherine Hickman Theater.

The event will begin at approximately 2:00pm each day and run until 11:00pm each evening. The theater is a lovely two block
walk from Gulfport's quaint and friendly village.

Gulfport is known as an artist's community with many one of a kind restaurants, shops and art galleries. The city's roots reach back to the early 1900s allowing visitors to reminisce in the yesteryear of true Southern hospitality while enjoying same of the finest local artists
Florida has to offer.

If the 3-5 mins walk to the center of town isn't your thing.
No problem. Gulfport has a free trolley service which runs daily!

Oh! I almost forgot to mention that Gulfport is a beach town. That's right. You can walk or take the trolley from the theater to
the beach in just a matter of minutes. The sand is white and sooo soft. In case you didn't know, Florida's Gulf Coast has some of the finest, most pristine and beautiful beaches anywhere in the world. Visit them while you still have the opportunity!!!

We look forward to seeing you at the Sea Breeze Film Festival for a weekend of fantastic films in a delightfully charming city!
